These areas are compact, walker-friendly, high-income suburbs of Washington, D.C. A part of neighboring Fairfax County, Virginia is also named Alexandria, but it is under the jurisdiction of Fairfax County. The city is sometimes referred to as the City of Alexandria or Alexandria City to distinguish itself from Alexandria, VA.
